Burlcore Mining Company Limited continues its long-running commitment to reliable, clean water for the communities surrounding its licensed concession in Busia, Uganda, building on a track record that includes the Mawero water and flood-resilience project.
Across the villages adjoining the concession, reliable water access is one of the most powerful levers for community health, school attendance and household stability. Burlcore's water programme has been built around that reality, prioritising practical interventions: protected sources, drainage and the rehabilitation of existing community infrastructure.
Each project is delivered with local leadership, community ownership and long-term maintenance in mind, rather than as a one-off press moment. The company's permanent on-site team ensures sustained follow-through.
These efforts sit within Burlcore's broader stewardship of the Lake Victoria Green Belt, where the company holds its medium-scale gold mining licence under Uganda's DGSM framework.
Interventions are selected in coordination with local health workers and sub-county leadership, prioritising villages where waterborne illness, school absenteeism and household time cost of water collection are highest. Where existing infrastructure can be repaired rather than replaced — a broken hand-pump, a silted drainage channel, a damaged rainwater tank — the company favours rehabilitation because it is faster, cheaper and easier for the community to keep running.
Each site is handed over with a written maintenance plan, spare parts and a named community caretaker, so the borehole or drainage channel does not fall out of service the moment the initial project team leaves.
