Burlcore Mining upholds modern mine safety standards in Busia.

Burlcore Mining Company Limited continues to operate to modern safety standards across its licensed Busia gold concession, with documented procedures, formal contracts and permanent on-site management forming the backbone of daily operations.

Across East Africa, parts of the artisanal sector still grapple with informal practices that put workers and communities at risk. Burlcore has consciously taken a different path, building its operation around the safety standards expected of a licensed, medium-scale operator within the DGSM framework.

Daily activity is anchored by formal contracts, written procedures and the constant presence of the company's on-site leadership team. Workers are inducted, supervised and supported, rather than left to navigate risk informally.

The result is a workplace where safety is treated as part of the operating model, not an optional extra.

Every worker on the concession — direct employee or contracted — goes through a documented induction covering site geology, exclusion zones, PPE requirements, emergency muster points and incident reporting. Toolbox talks are held at shift change, and heavy-equipment operation is restricted to named, trained personnel with the relevant certification on file.

The company maintains a written incident and near-miss log reviewed by on-site management, with corrective actions tracked to closure. That paper trail is not bureaucratic overhead — it is what allows the team to see patterns early and act before an incident becomes a serious injury.

"Safety isn't a poster on a wall. It's how we hire, how we train and how we run every shift in Busia."

Activity within the Burlcore operation

Burlcore continues to refine its safety standards as the operation matures, in line with the expectations placed on responsible mid-tier operators across the region.

It is part of the wider commitment to operating Burlcore's licensed concession to a standard that workers, host communities and partners can trust.

Safety performance is treated as a leadership KPI at Burlcore, weighed alongside production and community metrics rather than reported as a separate footnote.
