Burlcore Mining invests in education and youth opportunity in Busia.

Burlcore Mining Company Limited is broadening its community impact in Busia, Uganda, with a continued focus on education and the long-term opportunities available to young people growing up around the mine.

Education has long been recognised as one of the most durable forms of community investment a mining operator can make. By improving access to learning environments and supporting youth-focused initiatives, Burlcore is helping ensure that the benefits of its presence in Busia extend well into the next generation.

The company's community programmes have included contributions to local infrastructure that supports schooling, including road maintenance that improves access to classrooms and water and sanitation works that benefit households with school-age children. These initiatives sit alongside Burlcore's wider welfare commitments delivered in partnership with local leaders.

By embedding education within its community impact strategy, Burlcore is reinforcing the principle that responsible mining should leave a region stronger, not just for the duration of an operation but for the decades that follow.

Support is directed at the specific bottlenecks that keep children out of school around the concession: uniform and stationery cost at the start of each term, exam registration fees for candidate classes, and repairs to classroom blocks and latrines that make daily attendance realistic. Head teachers and school-management committees choose the priorities; Burlcore funds and delivers against them.

For older students, the company sponsors selected bursaries into secondary school and vocational training, with a preference for pupils whose households are unlikely to complete their education without external support.

"If we can play a part in helping young people in Busia reach their potential, then we're doing what a responsible operator should be doing."

Burlcore's community partnership work in Busia

Burlcore intends to continue developing its education-related initiatives alongside its other community programmes in Busia, with a focus on practical, measurable contributions that respond to the priorities raised by local leaders themselves.

The medium-term aim is straightforward: more Busia-born graduates ready for skilled roles in and around a modern gold operation, rather than a permanent dependence on outside labour.
