Burlcore Mining advances environmental rehabilitation in Uganda.

Burlcore Mining Company Limited continues to advance the environmental standards expected of a modern, medium-scale gold operator in East Africa, with rehabilitation, monitoring and stewardship treated as core operational disciplines.

Operating inside the Lake Victoria Green Belt brings real responsibility. Burlcore's approach is to plan rehabilitation alongside extraction from the outset, not as an afterthought once a pit is closed, with ongoing environmental monitoring across the licensed area.

The company works within the framework set by Uganda's Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), supported by its permanent on-site management team. Documented procedures, formal contracts and accountable oversight underpin daily operations.

This approach is deliberately different from less formal practices that have persisted across parts of the region's artisanal sector, and is part of what Burlcore believes responsible mid-tier mining in Uganda should look like.

Rehabilitation planning at Burlcore begins at the pit-design stage. Topsoil is stripped, stockpiled and preserved separately from overburden so it can be redeployed during reprofiling; drainage is engineered to avoid sediment loading of nearby watercourses; and progressive rehabilitation is scheduled into the mine plan rather than deferred to a distant closure date.

Water quality at nearby sources is periodically sampled, and vegetation cover on rehabilitated ground is re-established with indigenous species suited to the Lake Victoria basin, prioritising biodiversity value over cosmetic greening.

"Rehabilitation isn't something we leave until the end. It's planned, monitored and resourced from day one."

Burlcore continues to refine its environmental standards as the operation matures, with a clear emphasis on long-horizon stewardship of the land it works on.

The company sees responsible environmental practice not as a constraint, but as the foundation of a durable mining business.

The company reports environmental performance through the standard DGSM reporting channels and welcomes independent inspection as part of normal operating rhythm.
