Burlcore Mining expands Mawero relief efforts with an industrial cold storage facility.

Burlcore Mining has installed and commissioned a high-capacity industrial fridge freezer facility in Mawero, Busia District. The project sits directly alongside the community water well delivered earlier this year, marking phase two of the company's strategy to help resolve the long-standing Mawero water and health crisis.

The Mawero water crisis was never only a shortage of clean drinking water. It carried cascading effects: poor sanitation, food insecurity, and the inability to store temperature-sensitive medical supplies. The borehole and filtration system provided a continuous supply of safe water, and community leaders identified cold storage as the next essential step towards durable local development.

The new industrial-grade unit is powered by a localised solar-hybrid grid so that service continues through grid interruptions and seasonal load shedding. It has been sited beside the well to form a single, easily supervised community utility hub.

For local clinics, the facility changes healthcare logistics. Vaccines, antibiotics and anti-venoms previously could not be held reliably in Mawero because there was no dependable refrigeration. The unit provides a secure, climate-controlled environment that keeps those supplies viable through the year.

For farmers and traders, the freezer offers a way to preserve agricultural yields and perishable goods. That reduces waste, extends shelf life, and gives the local micro-economy a more stable foundation than daily-sale trading allowed.

"Providing water was the foundation, but true community resilience requires a multi-faceted approach. By pairing the water well with industrial cold storage, we are not just hydrating a community, we are supporting their healthcare system and protecting their livelihoods."

Burlcore's approach in Mawero is becoming a blueprint for the company's wider community programme. Working in tandem with local councils to identify specific, cascading needs, rather than offering one-off donations, is intended to build genuine long-term independence in the communities neighbouring the operation.

The results are already visible. Health workers report a marked drop in spoilage of critical medical supplies, and local vendors have seen steadier food prices as shelf lives extend. The facility also includes a dedicated section for chilling clean drinking water, which gives immediate relief to workers and residents through the dry season.

Burlcore will continue monitoring the impact of both the well and the cold storage facility, funding routine maintenance and providing technical training to local operators so the equipment stays serviceable for years rather than seasons.

"Our work in Mawero does not stop when the ribbon is cut. We are partners in this community's future, and we intend to see Mawero thrive for generations."
