Fifty-five pairs of maternal bedsheets delivered, and 39 mosquito nets permanently fixed over every bed and cot in the maternity ward.

Burlcore Foundation secures safe beginnings at Busia Health Centre IV.

At the Burlcore Foundation, our responsibility extends far beyond our daily operations; it lies in the heart and health of the communities we call home. Following a recent on-the-ground assessment by our Community Development team, we are proud to announce a hands-on initiative to protect new mothers and their babies at Busia Health Centre IV.

Serving a catchment area of over 63,000 people, including our local Mawero community, the vital government hospital's maternity ward faces significant resource challenges. Expectant mothers were routinely asked to bring their own sheets to give birth, while missing mosquito nets left newborns vulnerable to malaria.

Sustainable solutions, not just donations

We knew that simply dropping off supplies would not solve the root of the problem. Instead, the Burlcore Foundation focused on a sustainable, practical upgrade for the ward's 35 beds and 4 baby cots.

This July, we delivered 55 pairs of high-quality maternal bedsheets, providing enough stock for the hospital to rotate through washes without leaving beds bare, and ensuring mothers no longer need to bring their own linen.

Crucially, to combat the issue of missing supplies, we didn't just donate mosquito nets; we installed permanent, anti-theft metal brackets and rods to securely fix 39 brand-new nets over every bed and cot in the ward.

Hands-on community action

True community partnership requires rolling up our sleeves. Burlcore staff volunteered on-site to personally hand the bedsheets over to the ward team, and took the time to measure, drill and install the net fixings themselves. This direct effort ensures that both the linen and the nets stay exactly where they belong: protecting the mothers and infants who need them most.

Looking ahead

Securing the maternity ward is just the first step in our ongoing commitment to the Busia community. As we evaluate how best to support the region's health infrastructure, we are actively exploring future initiatives, including plans to supply life-saving formula to the hospital's heavily underfunded Malnutrition Clinic.

At the Burlcore Foundation, we are proud to stand alongside our community, ensuring that every new life in Busia begins in a safe, warm and protected environment.

"A mother should never be asked to bring her own bedsheets to give birth, and no newborn in Busia should sleep without a net. Fixing the nets in place permanently was the difference between a donation and a lasting solution."
