Scaling inclusion: women-led businesses in Burlcore's supply chain.

Burlcore Mining Company Limited is deepening its commitment to inclusive procurement, structuring literacy sessions, financial-skills training and dedicated supplier contracts so women-led enterprises around its Busia concession can plug directly into the mine's supply chain.

For a licensed, medium-scale operator working inside the Lake Victoria Green Belt, procurement is one of the most powerful levers for durable community development. Where those contracts go shapes household income for years.

Burlcore's programme starts with capability. Working with local partners, the company supports foundational literacy, numeracy, and small-business financial-skills sessions for women entrepreneurs in host villages - the underpinnings of being able to bid for and deliver a formal contract.

It then routes real procurement demand through that base: catering, uniforms, transport, cleaning services and light trades are being progressively contracted to women-led vendors under formal, prompt-pay terms.

"We treat procurement as a development tool. Every contract we can place with a women-led business is a household made more secure."

The company is expanding the programme in phases, adding new scopes of supply as the local vendor base builds capacity. Formal contracting standards remain non-negotiable: safety, quality and delivery accountability apply equally to every supplier.

The initiative sits alongside Burlcore's wider commitments to youth-led enterprise, clean-water infrastructure and long-term community investment across Busia.
