Burlcore Mining drives infrastructure investment across Busia, Uganda.

Burlcore Mining Company Limited continues to make practical, on-the-ground investments in the infrastructure that defines daily life in Busia, Uganda, ranging from road maintenance and drainage works to the recently completed Mawero water project.

Reliable infrastructure underpins both community wellbeing and economic activity in rural East Africa. By focusing its community programme on the basics, water, drainage and access roads, Burlcore is helping the villages surrounding its concession connect more easily to schools, clinics and regional markets.

The company's civil works in Mawero, which resolved a long-standing water crisis and improved flood resilience during the rainy season, sit alongside ongoing road grading and maintenance carried out across the district. Together, these projects represent a sustained, multi-year commitment to the operating environment Burlcore shares with its neighbours.

This approach reflects Burlcore's view that responsible mining is measured not only by what happens at the pit, but by the durability of the improvements left in the communities surrounding it.

The company prioritises infrastructure that serves the community first and the mine second: road spurs used by school children and market traders as much as by mine transport, drainage that protects homes downstream of the concession, and lighting that improves safety around trading centres at night.

Where possible, construction and maintenance work is contracted to Busia-based crews, so the spend circulates twice through the local economy — once as infrastructure, once as household income.

"When the road is open, the water flows, and the school is reachable, that's when you know your investment has actually changed something."

Local infrastructure works in Busia, Uganda
Community access improvements supported by Burlcore

Burlcore intends to continue identifying and supporting infrastructure projects that respond to priorities raised by local leaders in Busia, with a particular focus on water, drainage and access. The company sees this work as a permanent feature of its presence in the district, not a one-off contribution.

Each project is scoped with sub-county engineers and community leadership, then handed over with clear responsibility for ongoing upkeep to avoid the familiar pattern of new infrastructure decaying within a season.
